Anyone into owls?

I wasn't, but I am now. A visit to the East Kew Vinnies on the way home from geebum yielded this fantastic collection to put in my shadow box which is freshly painted and awaiting shadows. There were so many owls at the Vinnies, they filled about 5 big boxes, there were lots of really kitsch slip cast ceramic ones, fabric ones, plastic ones, glass ones, magnets, mobiles, candles, etc. I picked out the little hand-made folky ones but if you're into owls there are plenty left. I think their original owner must have passed away and the relos just dumped the collection! This must have been a passion for years for this person and it's so sad that it ended up here to be broken up. I feel I've done a little bit towards keeping some of them together and I met another person there who collected a few for her 'craft group' which calls itself 'the brown owls'!

Wales Street Primary School fete, Northcote, Sat 1st March

What fun! I'd forgotten how much fun! There's a few more coming up. I saw a sign on St Georges Road for the Merri Creek primary fete (must go back to check out dates) and I know the Lee St primary fete is coming up on the 15th or 16th March. Anyway here are the scores...

a beautiful and sturdy handbag, $2, a little jug and two wall hangings, 50c each - I liked one better than the other but I thought they might be cursed if they didn't stay together!

one of my favourite interiors from the 'decorative arts' book. It's a home in Bavaria that has world map wall paper and...

...this is a photo of the floor. It's made of 4,600 pieces of copper embedded in cement! which, according to the book, is "extremely functional, warmer than stone and cleans itself by being danced and walked upon"!

... is one of my favourite places to visit in Florence.

I love that the facade is so bare. I remember seeing postcards of images projected onto the facade at night as part of some art event in the 80's. Maybe they still do it? I wouldn't know because the church never seemed to be open. I went there about 3 times hoping to get inside and each time the doors were locked. On my last day in Florence I tried again (a Sunday when you think it would be open) to no avail but lo and behold there was an antique market in the piazza.

Now, this definitely wasn't going to fit into my luggage...

but a few of these would!

lovely painted metal brooches. I bought 3 of them and I'm still waiting for that parcel to arrive by sea.

There were lots of stalls of plastic American jewellery from the 80's

and all of it was quite expensive. Still, it was nice wandering around the market in the warmth of a summer evening and enjoying a post browse Peroni at a bar overlooking the piazza

Porta Portese

Ok, I think this is going to be a marathon post as Porta Portese is to markets what Coles is to the local milk bar. It's in Trastevere which is on the left bank of the Tiber river. The market starts on one long street and then diverges into a maze of tributary streets. To walk past every stall is probably a 5km journey. At the beginning there are lots of cheap Victoria market type stalls selling clothes, shoes, handbags, guns, etc.

And then the stalls selling cheap Indonesian jewellery start to appear, followed by the fake designer goods stalls. And this seems to go on for miles! And just as you start to think that there'll be no fodder for a garage sailor post, you come across this...

and you think, 'that looks a bit interesting'.

And then you see this...

Here's something I would've liked to have bought

Its a beautiful embroidered silk double bedspread, quite a few rips at the edges. 1000 euro. thats $1627.80! And it's sitting in direct sunlight. He's dreamin'

The market stalls are on either side of the road and the shoppers walk down the centre of the road. But behind the stalls, on the narrow footpaths, the gypsies set up their own alternative market. And it's here where you find the most interesting stuff. It's a true 'flea-market'

I have no idea what this guy was trying to sell from his trolley, I was too scared to get too close.

So this is what I ended up buying. It's not much but it was quite expensive and I'm getting scared about the cost of excess baggage.

Ok. I'm in catch up mode (see Davernator. So, here are a few posts from the markets in Rome. On my first Sunday there we went to a flea market near the Piazza della Marina.

It was really an antique market rather than a flea market as it was very expensive. But I couldn't help myself and had to buy these old plastic brooches...

central market finds

I love that I'm still able to post to garage sailor from over here in Estonia. My luggage is gonna be sooo overlimit! I'm trying to restrain myself from buying glass and ceramic but sometimes it's hard to resist.

I found the central market while on route to buy stainless steel dental wire for my other life. And it turns out they have "junk" stalls as well as fresh fruit and veg etc, and here are some of the things I found... (warning: present spoilers ahead)

it's a tray, it's tin, it has a picture of a strange black sausage on it. My buddies here tell me that it's traditional Estonian sausage, and it's traditional to serve it with a bowl of cranberries and beer. Lucky Max gets this as his travel present.

I got this at the same time...

as it seemed appropriate to not separate them. I don't, however, have any friends who hunt, so maybe it will go and live with Mitzi in the hills

russian market finds

I'd heard about the Russian market here in Tallinn but it doesn't appear in any of the guidebooks.

What I'd heard about it was that you have to keep your belongings very close to your body. I got someone to point it out to me on the map and headed over there yesterday (sat). It's really grotty and it's like being in a foreign correspondent report about chechnya but they did have some second hand stalls. There was also lots of cheap synthetic trash, some crowded food halls and the stinkiest fish market I've ever been in, I thought I was going to pass out!

So, of course, here are the spoils.

It's an old toy game and the back of it with the picture is made of tin so it'll probably be turned into jewellery, here you can see the stamp of the Russian Federation...

I also found this beautiful toy doll which will be coming back home unadulterated as a present for the knitter. She's about 7cm high and she's got one of those weighted bottoms so she always bounces back upright.

from the same stall I got these fantastic badges. They are made of tin and not plastic coated. My favourite is the blue eskimo. They're already jewellery so it's hard to think about cutting them up to make jewellery but i might just have to.

The doll was about $5 and the badges $10 which is cheap but I'm sure I was overcharged as I was a tourist. It's hard to bargain with someone with sores on their mouth and holes in the fingers of their gloves.

I also got this great collection of drink coasters...

again, all made of tin.

So, that's my first garage sailing post from Estonia, hopefully there'll be more. I've also found some great postcards in antique shops but I've sent them before photographing them.

oh dear, it's been a long time between garage sails! I'm going away for four months so I may not be posting here regularly. I'll be keeping Davernator up to date and who knows? maybe I'll find some old eurovision costumes at a garage sale in Estonia. I'll be sure to post if I do.

...there are no garage sales! Not a one! ...oh well, ok, one. At which I got for $5 each:

2 outdoor, falling apart chairs which are (apparently)
from the French Riviera!

Otherwise, there's only 2nd hand bookshop and expensive op-shop purchases. The op-shop in Warrandyte may be open on Sunday's but that's no excuse for daylight robbery. I found these beautiful Micasa coffee cups...

with 10 cents very clearly written on the bottom...

And the shop assistant tried to convince me that it said 1 dollar!!

I also got these fabulous glasses for $2 which make things appear brighter (good for when you're in a melancholy mood) but strangely work very well at cutting out the glare.

And this gorgeous bag - which I've dubbed my 80's Mosman bag - and its contents:

and 1941 which I remember seeing when I was in high school and being strangely aroused by the make out scene in the B52.

I'm in New Romantic Heaven

This is my first post from my new computer and it all feels a bit different. I've moved from pc to mac and there seem to be a few things missing. Like there's no hyperlink button and no way to format the text!! Oh well, it doesn't matter because I'm so excited about last weekend's purchase. Look what I found - 2 for $5

My fella and I sat and watched 'duran duran' (which is all the videos from the first two albums - including the soft porn 'night version' of girls on film) and we're saving 'sing blue silver' for one of those lazy post-Christmas afternoons

And, look what I dragged out of a skip last night and then carried home on a tram!

It's built to be attached to a wall. I'm gonna give it to my fella for Christmas so he can keep things in it at his new venture next year (I don't think he reads this as much as I thought - in fact, i don't think he reads it at all!)

Garage Sale at the Builders Arms Hotel on Saturday morning.

Way back in 1994 I packed up my car in Sydney and drove down the Hume for my new life in Melbourne and on arrival I spent my first evening drinking at the Builders Arms hotel in Fitzroy.

Wow! I've just discovered photobucket! How excellent it is. (Thank you to Poppalina for unknowingly putting me on to it)

So, I couldn't help myself and I did go garage sailing on Saturday. I didn't go searching but just popped into ones that I passed in my travels. Unfortunately I didn't find anything worth buying at the Builders Arms but in Brunswick East I found these...

As it's close to Christmas, most of my purchases this weekend were gifts, so unfortunately I can't show them here. My one purchase for myself was this gorgeous enamelled teapot. The lid is attached to the handle with a chain

However, I did have an extra addition to my house...

...with the introduction of my new housemate! She bought this in Newcastle a few years ago for $2. As you can imagine, I have lots of stuff. Enough stuff, in fact, to fill a 3 bedroom house. This means that there isn't much room, for others who live with me, to add stuff to the shared areas of the house. Control freak, Me? No!

I might take a break from Garage Sailing/Fete-ing for a while as it's been a bit full-on these last couple of weeks. I'm feeling a bit guilty about the amount of consumerism I'm partaking in. But, we'll see. I may not be able to hold myself back!

I went early and this time wore a hat which was sensible. It was quite a bit more expensive than others I've been to recently but I guess that illustrates the difference in demographic between Greensborough and North Carlton!

I got two huge pot plants for $15 each which is not a bargain by garage sale standards but still cheaper than the nursery.

I also got some Christmas presents so I can't really post them here as that will give them away.

I haven't been to many garage sales of late but that's because there are just so many fetes on at this time of year. If you're in the area and of the mind there are 2 on next weekend. Bell Primary in Preston is having an election day fete and on sunday the Golden Mary church in Nicholson st brunswick east is having a bazaar.

It was hot. There were flies. There were bargains to be had. I should have worn a hat.

It was at St Thomas's primary school on Diamond Valley Rd.

SGG and I visited a few Garage sales on the way to whet our appetite for the bargaining feast. I had to give SGG a few tips on the old haggle after one purchase went from $2 to $5 after she disputed the price as being too low!!!

Due to a march in the city protesting on the governments stance on climate change, I didn't get to any garage sales. It was a beautiful spring day and there was some other event involving horses, suits, feathers and public drunkeness on, but it seemed to draw quite a crowd in Swanston St today.

I went with SGG on her own which was fun.

I know that by engaging in garage sailing and making jewellery I am using finite resources, but I try and justify it by looking at it as recycling.

I only went to one garage sale this weekend and it was late on Sunday morning so I only made one purchase...

The reason I only went to one was because I had a busy weekend and I was quite worried about Barbra.

She hadn't been eating at all for a few days and then on thursday I found a few vomits and she tried to eat but ended up gagging. A visit to the vet (and $200 worth of blood tests) found nothing conclusive but he did mention the C-word. Very upsetting so I went to the fish shop (her favourite) and bought her a $10 fillet of Ling and chopped it up finely and she seems to be gradually recovering. Fingers crossed.

After rolling and posing for a bit she got fed up with the camera and sulked in a corner.

I headed out to Greensborough early this (beautiful) Sunday morning with the fella, smelly greek girl and friend for the Greenhills primary school fete. SMG and I had gone to the one last year and snapped up some amazing bargains but this year wasn't as good. People kept arriving with stuff for the trash and treasure stall all morning so there were new things going out every 10 mins. Maybe better things arrived after we left but we didn't get as much booty as last year.

This is a 'special issue' containing images from, and the results of the Mr David Contest and the Miss David Pageant.

Choice! It's a present for the prison guy.

I do! The Greens were having a fund raising garage sale in Northcote which I went to with my favourite fellow garage sailors, Smelly Greek Girl and her 3 offspring Bite Your Bum Off, Sing It Again and The Most Beautiful Girl In The World.

It was ok and I got a few things but then on the way home we passed Garage Sale Heaven. It was so good I had to go to the bank to top up!!

I thought youse might be interested in my pineapple wall. The result of an ebay addiction.

I haven't done much garage sailing lately, I went to one which was a whole street in Northcote and it was a complete dud!! These people actually thought that buyers would be interested in a ripped piece of fly screen. And they wanted $2 per video!! $2 - that's how much they are to buy from my local video ezy. Well, I'm back.... for now.

It's been so cold in Melbourne! It's hard to get up on a wintery saturday morning to brave the swells and blustery conditions of garage sailing, even if I do have a fine red yacht!

And I have a new housemate who's brought her stuff into the house and so I've actually had to get rid of some stuff rather than accumulate more.

So Saturday the 22nd July 2006 reaped these rewards....

a stainless steel stovetop espresso maker. An excellent replacement for the one I left down at Anglesea on the last weekend of summer (sigh).

Its a cork-backed TIN placement. Can you believe it? It's wonderful and was the subject of debate with the knitter, knitter's sister and prison guy (over delicious french toast at Empire Cafe) about whether I can cut it up and turn it into kangaroos. We decided, probably not.

That was fun, I'll try and do it again soon.

What a great day of garage saleing! I only went to 2 - one in Northcote and one in Thornbury - but managed to spend $65 and got all of these great bargains!!!

However... Can I only publish 5 photos at a time? I've uploaded 15 of them but only 5 seem to have appeared. Maybe I have to do it as another post.

... for it is the only reason I can think of that that superbarn called Savers in Geebum could have nothing that I wished to purchase. And the Brotherhood shop underneath had only 3 books worthy of a second glance, one of which was $5! Five Dollars for a book from an op-shop. No Way!

Yes, Merri Creek Primary School Fete. Not as good as last year, even though I was there quite early. There was no furniture and the bric-a-brac stall consisted of one trestle. That's right, just ONE trestle. But look, what's over there.... 5 tressels of kiddie stuff!! I'm over the kiddie stuff concentration. What's going on out there in fete donation land. I wonder if nursing homes have fetes?

I got the fish because I liked the scaley surface on the plastic. It will become jewellery.

And I found one addition for the professional library.

I managed to fit in an op-shop visit while I was working at gee-bum on Tuesday. It's a cute op-shop in a falling down old weatherboard at the back of the local institution for the intellectual disabled. But.... I only managed to pick up a few books. Some of them are pretty good though. Take, for instance,...

All your great classics are in here, including "Slip Ascot", "Mock Blouse", "Scarf-tistic Hats" and a whole chapter on Napkin Folding.

A few other essentials for the bookshelf ....

And last but by no means least...

which features some stunning interior decorating ideas such as....

Well, a far from productive weekend even though it involved a trip down to the Mornington Peninsula. Once again, no balloons - what's going on you people? The best I could do was attend the toy library fete in Clifton Hill on Sunday, and here are the results....

Now, I have to speak from inexperience here (being the child-free garage sailor that I am) but this doesn't seem like the kind of thing one would buy second hand....

Needless to say I didn't fork over the $10. Nor did I fork it over for this....

Quite a cute doll, but not cute enough.

And finally, my one purchase of the day. I think I did quite well to find this gem amidst the pro-creation paraphernalia

And so, I have my Sunday evening entertainment worked out!

yes, slim pickings this weekend I'm afraid. My hen's weekend duties precluded me from any serious garage sailing but there was nary a balloon to be seen. I did, however, pick this up at the Anglesea op-shop.....

It's a Time Speed Distance Computer. Yes, that's right, a computer! The instructions are on the back......

But I'm still lost so I think I'll cut it up and turn it into jewellery.
